HomeCamp 2 is this Saturday

Following hot on the heels of the first HomeCamp, so HomeCamp 2 happens. For the uninitiated, HomeCamp is the home hacking, automation and green technology community. Think smart meters, monitoring and graphing energy usage.

HomeCamp 2 is on Saturday 25th April 2009, 10am until 6pm at Bash Creations, 65-71 Scrutton Street, London, EC2A 4PJ.  A map of the venue is here.

HomeCamp 2 aims to build on the success of the first event, with an OpenSim event running alongside for virtual participation and to demo the RealWorld and VirtualWorld modelling and automation that the community has been doing.

I’d like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, CurrentCost, Greenmonk, Pachube , ReactionGrid and Onzo, as without them this event would not be happening.

theattick.tv are the official Media Partners for HomeCamp and will be streaming the event over on the HomeCamp ustream.tv channel and also streaming into the HomeCamp sim on ReactionGrid.  They will also be interviewing people thoughout the day and putting together video footage from the day for HomeCamp TV.  So if you are coming to the event, be sure to get yourself on film!

So far have around 75 people signed up.  If you can’t make it, then you can tune in either on the live video ustream, or sign up on ReactionGrid and join us virtually on OpenSim.

Virtual HomeCamp meeting today at 3pm BST

We have a Virtual HomeCamp meeting today on the HomeCamp sim on ReactionGrid.  It is a planning session for the real event which takes place this Saturday.

As we have people attending the session today from all over the world, and what with all the daylight savings, I have been scratching my head about this.  So I decided it would be best to put a clock somewhere and I came accross these excellent clocks.

So the meeting today is 3PM BST (GMT+1).  Here is the time now in BST:

Here is the time in Second Life Time (SLT) is in (PST / GMT -08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada):

Home Camp Update

This is a re-write of an original post over on the Home Camp Blog.  If you’ve already seen it, then apologies for duplication.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about Home Camp which is shaping up to be a great event. There are only a couple of places left now, so if you haven’t put your name down on the wiki, then head over and sign up.

http://homecamp.pbwiki.com/

The event is limited to 50 places with 49 people having signed up.  If we go over the 50, then continue to put your name down in case we have any last minute drop outs etc.

Current Cost are giving each attendee to Home Camp a shiny new Current Cost monitor. We’ll be one of the first to get our hands on these.

Do remember to suggest your session topic over on the google discussion. We are also using this area to share code. Ruby code was added this week.  Dale has also added c# and Java Code. Depending how many session topics are suggested, will depend how we run the day. So feel free to suggest ideas.

Look forward to seeing you all there next week and if you can’t make it, we’ll have some live streams.

Steve Lamb talking on security at Heroes Launch

Last week I attended the Heroes launch in Birmingham. As with all Microsoft product launches, it is rare for a single product to launch nowadays. In keeping with this tradion, we saw the launch of Windows Server 2008, Visual Server 2008 and Sql Server 2008.

I was lucky enough to be able to stream Steve Lamb’s session on security in Windows Server 2008. Great content, if not slightly dodgy camera work!

The 2008 Community Launch Event

We’re putting together a community event at Microsoft in Reading and I’ll be there with the Live Meeting User Group.

On Tuesday and Wednesday 8th/9th of April we will be holding the 3rd Combined IT Pro User Group events in Reading at the Microsoft office in TVP.

This event will involve all of the UK IT Pro User Groups and will have a massive range of breakout sessions so there will certainly be something to appeal to everyone.

For loads of information including the full agenda and registration form see the link below:

http://www.ukusergroups.co.uk

Finally, on each evening of the event (8th and 9th April) we will be holding a small event in Reading at a local restaurant. There will be food, networking and a tech quiz with some prizes! This event is limited to 40 places and the sign up form will be live on the same site above over the weekend.

London Social Media Cafe

I’m going to the London Social Media Cafe this Friday at the Coach and Horses in Greek Street, Soho, London.

I went to one of these last week and vowed to try and make each one. Packed full of interesting peole and a chance to geek out, meet great people and all in the confis of a local hostelry!

Huge big up to Lloyd Davies, these are great events.

[update] here’s a video of Lloyd playing the seesmix theme tune that he created.

The Seesmic .NET Time Drain

I have created the Seesmic .NET Time Drain using ASP.NET Ajax.  I’m not making it public at the moment, because in true seesmic style, it is pre-alpha. But if you find it, then great.

This project has been developed with the intention of creating a .NET class and library allowing other .NET developers to easily build on the Seesmic API and platform.

I have not been paid to create Time Drain. So there are bugs. I offer no warranty or guarantee regarding the suitability of the code or usability of Time Drain.  There are no warranties, and no special offers or cuddly toys.

What I hope this does do, is go some way to opening up seesmic to the .NET developer community allowing us all to benefit from new and usefull apps.  Ping me if you want to get involved.

Arthur Pounder Diamond Geezer

I finally met Arthur Pounder today, a great guy that heads the Unified Communications & RTC User Group.  I say finally met, becasue I had a great conversation with Arthur last March and we never got around to meeting because he was in the United States.

I really enjoyed the OCS launch.  You can read the post I made about it over on my other blog on Microsoft Subnet.

Here’s a photo of Arthur, taken at the Anchor on Clink Street, London Bridge.  Arthur has a big smile on his face, because he picked up the bag with the Jabra IP phone rather than the bag I picked up with the equally lovely but far cheaper Jabra headset.  Who knows, maybe one will magically arrive in the post :D

Arthur Pounder, happy with his phone.
